St. John's Spring Chess Festival Results
The final stop of Daniel Rokhvarger's Atlantic Chess Tour, which included Halifax, NS; Summerside, PEI; and Fredericton, NB, was here in St. John's, NL, at Memorial University of Newfoundland's Engineering Building. Huge thanks to Daniel for bringing this event to us over the Easter weekend (April 18-20). He was incredibly busy posting results online after the events were completed and we are very grateful for his efforts. We hope everyone enjoyed the events!
There were four events, including a 5-round rapid 20+5, blitz 3+2, bughouse 5+0, and open classical 90+30.
The rapid event was won clear first by Moon Nguyen who finished with a perfect 5/5! There were 21 players in the event, making it the most popular event of the weekend. Congratulations Moon! In 2nd clear was Daley Merrigan, and tied for third were Steve Martin, Ryan Pickard, and Rensel Matthew Bacuyag (who also won top junior medal).
Results and pictures from the event are below.

The main tournament of the event was the open classical which was won clear first by Vimal Simha with 4/5 points (and no losses) who secured first place with a nice game versus Steve Martin in the final round. This event was a first as it had games broadcast online via DGT board, and was also FIDE rated. To my knowledge there have been very few FIDE rated events in the province. The only one I know of is perhaps 1970 Canadian Open in St. John's, which was won by Bent Larsen.

The two remaining events were Blitz and Bughouse. Both of these events went over very well, particularly the bughouse tournament, which we will need to include again in future events.
Top three winners in the blitz were:
1) Daley Merrigan 9/10
2) Ryan Pickard 8/10
3) Moon Nguyen 7/10
Complete results of the Blitz tournament are here: https://chess-results.com/tnr1143566.aspx?lan=1&art=4&turdet=YES&flag=30
Top three teams in Bughouse tournament were:
1) Daley Merrigan and Ryan Pickard (again! :))
2) Muharrem Kemaoglu and Steve Martin
3) Moon Nguyen and John David Farrell
Below are additional pictures from the event.
