Premier Furey Presents Anthony Leonard With NL Open 2024 Trophy
On November 28 2024, Premier Andrew Furey presented our NL Open trophy to Anthony Leonard who won the annual championship for the fifth time. The presentation was made at the St. John's Confederation Building. The NL Open chess tournament was a 5-round weekend event held October 25-27 at the MUN Engineering Building. Anthony won the event with 4.5/5 points in a field of 38 players. Congratulations to Anthony!
The NLCA would like to thank Premier Furey and other government representatives for taking the time to recognize Anthony's achievement and to meet with some members of the chess community in attendance as well as Anthony's friends and family. Anthony showed Premier Furey some opening ideas and common principles in a popular chess opening, the Italian Game:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4.
Thanks to Alick Tsui for taking many pictures during the presentation and for providing the pictures used in this article. Alick was very active in organizing chess tournaments in the early 2000's.
